Director of Investment Design

Contract type:
Date closing:

We know that keeping active improves our health. Sport England is the government body responsible for growing and developing grassroots sport and getting more people active. We want everyone regardless of age, background or ability to feel able to engage in sport and physical activity.

In December 2015, the Government set a bold and ambitious direction for sports policy, which looks at how sport and activity can have a meaningful and measurable impact on improving people’s lives, focusing on: physical wellbeing, mental wellbeing, individual development, social and community development and economic development.

With these outcomes in mind, Sport England recently launched a new strategy, Towards an Active Nation, which will see a dramatic shift in emphasis - changing both why and how we invest to achieve these outcomes. A significant focus will be to invest in tackling inactivity and increasing engagement in sport by those who do the least, for example women, older people, those who have a disability and those in lower socio-economic groups.

Director of Investment Design

London or Loughborough

Realising our new strategy means a significant change for Sport England and our partners. The Director of Investment Design is a critical role that will shape that change by helping us take a new approach to how we design grant programmes. We want to reach new audiences and this will mean attracting new partners, using our grants in innovative ways and incentivising the sports sector to think and act differently. We need someone with the creativity to apply grants in new ways, the customer focus needed to ensure our applicants have a good experience and the understanding to ensure we comply with the regulatory framework that governs our public funding.

We are seeking an outstanding individual with extensive experience of outcome driven grant-making, or you come from a comparable analytical environment with a strong understanding of wider funding mechanisms in the charity sector. You will be a strategic and creative thinker with the ability to understand how far this can be applied within the reality of a public sector grant-making environment. The ability to build effective relationships with senior colleagues and external partners supported by highly developed diplomacy, influencing and engagement skills will be essential.
